Paddling - Level 1 Coach Award Trainer

Level 1 Coach Award Trainer provides the first step towards paddlesport coaching progression. BAC can facilitate this four-day training and assessment course that can be delivered over two weekends with a programme designed to develop an ability to plan, deliver and review safe, ethical and effective paddling sessions.

(CANI approved and accredited Level 1 Coach Award Trainer)

Course Dates:

TBC subject to demand and minimum 6 registered course participants

Course pre-requisites:

For registration candidates will need:

  • To be aged 18 years are over before course commencement date
  • To understand the basics of maneuvering a canoe and kayak through participation or observation
  • To register directly with CANI for their work folders and CR forms
  • To demonstrate an active interest in paddlesport and be keen to learn more

This course is only available as a boat based option and prospective candidates will be required to have completed the following prior to course commencement.

  • Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT)
  • The new 2 Star or old 2 Star in Canoe and Kayak

For course registration and acceptance these must be produced on the first training day.

BAC can provide training for FSRT and Star 1 and Star 2 training (subject to minimum group training 6 persons)

Course summary:

Level 1 Coach Award Trainer provides the first step towards paddlesport coaching progression.  The four-day training and assessment course will be delivered over two weekends with a programme designed to develop for the ability to plan, deliver and review safe, ethical, effective, paddling sessions.

During the course candidates will be provided with the opportunity to develop what to coach and how to coach techniques for canoes and kayaks, will also be introduced to a range of paddling games and activities to help support their future coaching and will offered practical training towards:

  • Preparing coaching activities
  • Establishing a safe working environment
  • How to prepare participants for coaching activities
  • How to deliver prepared sessions
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of personal coaching practice
  • How to manage effective and appropriate rescues

Who needs Level 1 Coach Award Trainer?

The course is set at a level for assistant coaching to support candidates that will be introducing canoeing and kayaking to new paddlers and is designed to be as accessible and suitable for a wide spectrum of trainers including::

  • Parent(s) / volunteers for youth and community groups or clubs
  • Paddlers who would aspire to assist with paddle coaching
  • Candidates that are developing their CV for a career in outdoor activity

What equipment do I need to bring?

Candidates need to bring is foot wear for the water, a long sleeved top for under your wet suit and a towel /toiletries.

Candidates are also encouraged to bring personal equipment including safety equipment for the opportunity to be coached using personal equipment although all equipment can be provided courtesy of Belfast Activity Centre from their boathouse located at Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast.
